Stop sleep apnea in just one night—and throw out that bulky mask

Do you toss and turn all night, never falling deep into sleep? Do you wonder why you even bothered going to bed at all because you wake every morning feeling like you got no rest at all? Do you snore so loudly it wakes you up, or stop breathing for 5 seconds or more as you sleep?

You could go to an expensive sleep clinic, where they’ll hook you up to various machines and monitor your sleeping for a few nights. A couple thousand dollars later, they’ll probably tell you that you have sleep apnea—a condition in which your breathing stops as you sleep. And then you’ll be given a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) machine that delivers compressed air through a bulky mask you have to wear all night. Or you could have surgery to remove the excess tissue blocking your airway.

Or you could start feeling relief now—without uncomfortable contraptions or going under the knife—thanks to one of HSI’s most trusted sources.

Breathe easy with a formula that fights apnea at the source

If you’ve been an HSI member for a while, you know I’m a big fan of Peaceful Mountain. I don’t go on a trip without my Travel Rescue kit (“Quit feeding superbugs—silver knocks out bacteria without conventional dangers,” December 2008). And when founder Steven Frank started his new line, Nature’s Rite, I jumped right on their Leg Relaxer (“Clam the gnawing of restless legs in minutes with targeted herbal relief,” July 2009).

So when he told me that praise was pouring in for their new Sleep Apnea Relief, I knew I had to tell you about it. Especially because of the way Sleep Apnea Relief came to be—out of Steven’s own need for it.

You see, Steven had been struggling with sleep apnea for five years. He’d tried everything out there, but nothing worked. Each episode of apnea lasts about a week, during which time he would wake every 60 or 90 seconds throughout the night. Obviously, the man was getting no rest.

So he decided to do something with those sleepless nights. He read all he could about apnea until he fully understood the cause—a problem with the signaling between the brain and diaphragm muscles during the transition to stage 2 sleep (the intermediate stage right before deep sleep).

Once he understood that, the search was on for an herb that would increase the communication between the brain and those muscles. He found that in lobelia, a flowering plant traditionally used by Native Americans to treat respiratory and muscle disorders. It’s a relaxant that can soothe the nerves and ease tension.

Steven decided to add thyme, which enhances the activity of lung membranes, to the lobelia in the hopes of getting more use out of each breath. He took it, went to bed….and slept. He tried it the next night, and the next, and it kept working. Amazingly, he’d hit on the right herbs on the first try. As he told me, he was “beyond excited” because it didn’t just prove his theory—it ended that five year struggle.

That was about five years ago. In that time, he’s been working on tweaking the formula, adding more herbs to increase the effectiveness. He added cramp bark, which relaxes stressed muscles. Chamomile also has relaxing effects, and meadow sweet ensures that the other herbs are fully absorbed.

When he was finally happy with it, he called it, quite simply, Sleep Apnea Relief, and started sharing the blend that had saved his nights.

Steven is quick to say that Sleep Apnea Relief won’t necessarily work for everyone (after all, nothing does). Some people have such bad obstructions that they need more direct physical help. But for MOST people suffering from sleep apnea, this formula means not having to sleep with a machine on the floor next to your bed, pumping air through a mask strapped to your face.

Steven calls that freedom, and wants to share that with everyone who needs it.

Even with the worst obstructive sleep apnea—Sleep Apnea Relief can help

If you have obstructive sleep apnea, you might be thinking your condition is just too much for any herbal formula to handle. But don’t resign yourself to that bulky oxygen machine yet.

With obstructive sleep apnea, your airway is blocked by either a sagging soft pallet or other tissues. Even though this blockage contributes to your inability to breathe through the night, it’s not the real cause of the problem.

When you sleep, your brain reduces the intensity of the signals to your skeletal muscles so you don’t act out your dreams. Well, as we age, other signals start getting reduced, too. Including the signals to your diaphragm, which controls your breathing rate.

If the signals going from your brain to your diaphragm are reduced too much, you can stop breathing altogether. This causes your blood oxygen level to decrease—when it drops so low that it’s dangerous, your brain sounds the alarm, causing you to take an immediate deep breath. With obstructive sleep apnea, this fast intake of breath sucks the sagging tissue into your airway, causing a loud snort that disrupts your sleep.

So if you take care of the brain-signaling problem that causes your breathing to stop, the obstruction of the airway is no longer an issue. Sleep Apnea Relief increases your respiration intensity so you don’t stop breathing.

Start sleeping soundly in just a couple of days

Are you already thinking about how good a full night’s sleep is going to feel? If the response Nature’s Rite has received from happy customers is any indication, it’s going to feel great. They’ve found that many people come back and order another six month’s worth of Sleep Apnea Relief at a time—and have some pretty great words for it when they place those orders.

Annette found relief in only two days. She used to fall asleep behind the wheel of her car because she was so tired during the day after so many sleepless nights. But now she feels rested and alert. Her daughter also tried it—and it stopped her snoring.

Stan had to use a CPAP for four years, but is now a firm believer in Sleep Apnea Relief. He says he “won’t go back to that machine again!”

Maybe Carol puts it best. She wrote to Steven to say: “Before Sleep Apnea Relief neither one of us were able to sleep because of my husband’s severe apnea and snoring, especially the snoring. The first time he tried those natural herbs all that changed! I was so excited the first night that I literally cried. Even our 18-year-old daughter noticed the change in my husband after he had been able to sleep and breathe at night instead of choking and snoring. I think the person who developed this herbal remedy should be awarded a Nobel Prize.”

Now, you do have to make sure to take Sleep Apnea Relief every day if you have sleep apnea every night. There is no cumulative effect with the herbs in this formula. Some people have sleep apnea only periodically—you can take Sleep Apnea Relief just during those episodes.

Harvard Medical School book's authors cite study after study that cast supplements as extremely useful

Alert from HSI

…Americans eat WAY too much sugar. In 1909, the average American consumed about 12 pounds of sugar a year. Sound like a lot? That’s nothing. Today, on average, we consume more than 150 pounds each year. That’s a river of sugar flowing through us, and it absolutely plays a key role in the rise of obesity, diabetes, and chronic diseases. That’s why any suggestion that chocolate has a healthy side should not be taken as a green light to indulge in chocolate. That said, in a review of dietary habits among heart attack survivors, Swedish researchers concluded that moderate chocolate intake might significantly reduce risk of death from heart disease. Previous research has shown that antioxidants in dark chocolate appear to help lower blood pressure and improve blood flow.

…“Stayin’ Alive”—that’s the Bee Gees song to remember when you’re giving CPR. The rhythm of the song happens to be about 100 beats per minute, which is the ideal rate for chest compressions. And if you ever do find yourself giving this type of CPR to a cardiac arrest victim, you might actually increase his chance of survival by skipping the attempt to assist breathing with mouth-to-mouth ventilation. A new study confirms previous research that shows significantly higher survival rates when the mouth-to-mouth step is eliminated and chest compressions are begun on out-of-hospital cardiac arrest victims as soon as possible after their collapse.

And, in case you didn’t see it in the e-Alert…

…Here’s another blow for those medical mainstreamers who love to crack this hilarious bon mot: Vitamin supplements just give you expensive urine. In a new study from Seattle’s Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, medical records of more than 77,000 adults over the age of 50 were followed for five years. Supplement use for each subject was recorded at the outset of the study. Results: Risk of cardiovascular disease was reduced among those who took multivitamins and vitamin E. Also, mortality rate during the study period was lower among those who took supplements of vitamins C and E.

…A new Harvard Medical School book (“Healthy Eating: A Guide to the New Nutrition”) cautions that only a “tiny handful” of studies support supplement use. Then, throughout the book, the authors cite study after study that cast supplements as extremely useful. Vitamin D supplements get a nod, of course. Omega-3 fatty acids? Absolutely. Vitamins C and E, beta-carotene, and zinc get special note for preventing age-related macular degeneration. In Harvard’s own take on the USDA pyramid, calcium supplements are included. And folic acid for women? Of course. But the book also examines a study that shows how folic acid and vitamin B6 reduce risk of heart attack or death due to heart disease. Additional studies are cited in which folic acid curbs memory loss and reduces colon cancer risk. Looks like that tiny handful of studies turned out to be an important handful!

Every cancer patient on chemotherapy needs to know about milk thistle

Look No Further

Posted by Jenny Thompson

“No other treatment for liver toxicity exists.”

That’s a truly amazing statement. It comes from a cancer researcher – Dr. Kara Kelly – who recently published a study that ALL cancer patients need to know about.

Dr. Kelly’s statement is amazing because the treatment is milk thistle – a botanical that’s been used to treat liver problems for centuries. And this is where those who swear by conventional medicine (and dismiss alternative medicine) have no choice but to read it and weep: A century of modern drug development has not produced a single treatment as effective as milk thistle for treating liver toxicity.

But Dr. Kelly doesn’t have it quite right. In fact, there IS another very effective treatment for liver toxicity – an amino acid known as NAC.

All cancer patients who receive chemotherapy need to know about NAC and milk thistle. And hopefully their doctors will see the light and help them use the only treatments that can protect their livers.

The fixer

Your liver does a remarkable job in neutralizing toxins that enter your body. But the liver can be overwhelmed fairly easily. For instance, overuse of acetaminophen creates a potentially fatal burden.

If a few too many Tylenols can do that, just imagine the effects of repeated chemotherapy doses.

Dr. Kelly and her colleagues at New York’s Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center recruited 50 children with liver inflammation. Each child was undergoing chemotherapy to treat leukemia.

For 28 days, half the group received a milk thistle supplement and half received placebo. Four weeks after the intervention period, markers indicating liver inflammation were significantly lower among children in the milk thistle group.

Dr. Kelly told HealthDay News that she believes milk thistle will reduce liver inflammation in patients receiving other types of chemo for other cancers. She and her team also plan additional research to determine if milk thistle, taken at the beginning of chemotherapy, can actually prevent liver inflammation from occurring.

I’m going to place my bet now and predict that this mighty botanical is up to the task.

In case of emergency

Now…about NAC.

As I’ve mentioned before, intravenous NAC has become standard emergency room protocol for the treatment of hepatotoxicity – liver damage due an overload of chemicals, such as acetaminophen.

WebMD (a VERY mainstream medical guide) describes NAC as an anti-inflammatory antioxidant that promotes blood flow and enhances oxygen delivery. The result: NAC saves livers and save lives.

Cancer patients, if you’re undergoing chemo, talk to your doctor about preventing liver damage with milk thistle and NAC.

More tips to relieve heartburn and acid reflux

What would you be willing to give up to rid yourself of chronic heartburn?

In the e-Alert “Pain at the Pump” (7/27/09), I told you about a study that showed how Nexium, Prilosec and other proton-pump inhibitors (PPI) may actually prompt heartburn – the very condition they’re supposed to treat.

In response to that e-Alert I received an e-mail from an HSI member named Mark whose experience may be useful to others who suffer from heartburn or acid reflux.

Mark: “I suffered from chronic acid reflux up till about 4 years ago. As you might expect, my doctor prescribed a PPI to control the problem and after a little research on Google I found out what this drug could do to me so I stopped taking it after 7 weeks. Within two days my acid problem came back so I once again headed for Google, typed in “Home Remedies for Acid Reflux Disease” and found several sites that listed the causes of acid reflux and ways to prevent its reoccurrence.

“While Dr. Spreen is right in saying refined sugar and flour may cause acid reflux the site I used also said you should avoid milk, coffee, alcohol, cured meats like cold cuts and ham, chocolate, cheese (unless it’s old cheese), yogurt, bread, soda pop and several others.

“The author of the article suggested that a ball of undigested glucose from these products sits in the stomach causing the PPIs in the cells to fire continually trying to digest it causing an abundance of acid in the stomach, which eventually moves upward causing acid reflux. I used to get heartburn from bread, milk and yogurt so I stopped using them along with everything else on the list until the problem went away; it took several months.

“I can now enjoy a cup of coffee in the morning and I use dark rye bread made from 100% rye flour, no sugar and no yeast on occasion. If and when I get a little bit of acid reflux I take a tablespoon of raw cider vinegar, which works well. As for a milk substitute I use almond milk.

“You have to give up a lot to curb the acid, but the health benefits are worth it!”

Gardasil: Cervical Cancer Vaccine Now Offered With ‘Extra Perks’

Dear Reader,

Just the mere mention of the word ‘vaccines’ is enough to send alarm bells ringing for most of us these days.

If it’s not the UK government ordering too much of the H1N1 vaccine (and the retrospective fact that the Swine Flu pandemic was blown out of proportion), then it is the effectiveness and safety of vaccines, like this one, that’s being questioned. Now the furore surrounding the H1N1 vaccine has died, yet another vaccine laden with controversy has reared its ugly head.

This time (and no surprise here) it’s the cervical cancer vaccine, Gardasil.

A little bit of this, a little bit of that

Regular readers of the Daily Health alert will know that we’ve written about Gardasil a number of times. Here’s a few fact’s to bring you up to date:

  • In September 2008 the Department of Health (DOH) introduced a HPV immunisation programme to routinely vaccinate girls aged 12 - 13 against cervical cancer. A catch-up programme started in Autumn 2009 when girls aged 16 - 18 were offered the vaccine.

  • There are more than 100 subtypes of the human papilloma virus (HPV) and most women who are sexually active will have had the virus at some stage in their life. Usually, the body’s natural defences defeat the virus, and most women never even know they had it in the first place.

  • Gardasil, is effective against only four major HPV strains or subtypes. Gardasil has been granted a licence by the EU for use in children and adolescents aged 9 to 15 years and in adult females aged 16 to 26 years for the prevention of cervical cancer caused by human papilloma virus (HPV) types 6, 11, 16, and 18.

  • Almost 11,900 girls and young women have reported adverse events associated with Gardasil - including paralysis, coma, seizures and more.

  • A number of deaths associated with Gardasil have also been reported – varying between 32 and 45 depending on the source. Even though these numbers could be seen as statistically low compared to the number of girls that have received it, one should still ask: ‘If it was your daughter, would the statistics matter?’

  • In the US, The National Vaccine Information Centre, a private vaccine-safety group, compared Gardasil adverse events to another vaccine, one also given to young people, but for meningitis. Gardasil had three times the number of Emergency Room visits - more than 5,000 and reports of side effects were up to 30 times higher with Gardasil.

  • Snow White and the poison apple

Clearly Gardasil is wrapped in controversy. And it’s because of this controversy and especially questions about its effectiveness that the number of young women getting the vaccine, in the age group 16 – 18, has been declining. As if Merck’s (the manufacturers) intensified marketing campaign for Gardasil has not been enough, now, young women aged 16 to 18 will be given £45 worth of shopping vouchers if they complete an inoculation course against the HPV virus.

Bosses at NHS Birmingham East and North, which is carrying out the £22,500 incentive pilot scheme, said it has ‘real benefits for health’ and there are plans to role out the pilot scheme to the rest of the UK.

Luckily there’s a few campaigners that think this whole ‘Snow White and the poison apple’ scheme amounts to nothing less than bribery and they also have fears that it may encourage promiscuity and raise pregnancy rates – since many girls believe Gardasil is a ‘safe sex’ vaccine.

Then there is also the fact that these girls (16 – 18) no longer require parental consent to get the vaccine. Suddenly it has become morally right to treat an under aged child with any sort of medical treatment without the consent of, and in the presence of, their parent.

Doctors have a moral and legal obligation to provide all patients with information regarding the risks and benefits of any medical treatment. With this information, the patient can then give informed consent.

The question is: Can we expect under aged girls to make this decision when perhaps they are not yet mature enough to do so? Dangling a carrot in front of their noses with £45 shopping vouchers surely can only influence their decision with bias and in favour of the vaccine punters... with little thought to the possible damaging side effects they may get in their shopping basket.

    ..and another thing

They often get a bad rap for causing indigestion and flatulence, but the health benefits of beans (and other legumes, such as lentils and chickpeas) make them a stellar choice in a healthy diet. Beans are:

** An excellent source of vegetarian protein
, providing six to seven grams per ½ cup serving.

** High in folic acid, which may help to protect against cancers of the lung, colon, and cervix, and prevent birth defects.

** A great source of fibre, dishing up 25-30 per cent of the recommended daily allowance of dietary fibre, 75 per cent of which is insoluble - the type that reduces the risk of colon cancer.

** A low-glycaemic-index food, making them a good option for diabetics.

    Until Next Time,

Take Control of High Blood Pressure by Balancing Potassium and Sodium | Print |  E-mail

Take Control of High Blood Pressure by Balancing Potassium and Sodium

    Dear Reader,

A friend recently sent me this brief e-mail message: "My banana has a sticker that says 'party with potassium.'"

Good advice. Potassium helps maintain heart health, muscle function, and transmission of nerve impulses. Now that's an excellent party! And no city loves a party more than New York.

    Wrong end of the stick

Thing is, New York (NYC) is going about it the wrong way.

Recently, NYC Health Department officials began a partnership with other cities and health organizations. They call it the National Salt Reduction Initiative (NSRI). And their goal is to help people control high blood pressure by encouraging restaurants and food producers to voluntarily reduce sodium content of prepared foods by 25 per cent over the next five years.

I have to admit, I find many prepared foods too salty. But if the primary goal is to control high blood pressure, there's a better way to do it.

Dr. Sonia Angell of the NYC Health Dept. said that NSRI simply wants the mix of high and low sodium to be balanced.

And balance is the right idea. But she's missing a key ingredient: potassium.

    Get it started

In recent years, more and more nutritionists have come to recognize the importance of balancing potassium and sodium.

According to the Linus Pauling Institute, more than 20 per cent of your body's resting energy is devoted to maintaining a balance of high potassium inside cells and high sodium outside cells. When the balance is right, cells function properly to do their important work. When the balance is off, lots of things go wrong – such as blood pressure control.

The late Dr. Robert C. Atkins, knew that high blood pressure wasn't a high sodium problem.

In his "Dr. Atkins' Diet Revolution" he cited numerous studies that came to this conclusion: Blood pressure can be lowered simply by increasing potassium intake. No reduction in sodium is necessary unless a patient's intake is unreasonably high.

One of those studies demonstrated that with just one daily serving of a potassium-rich food, the risk of death by stroke might be cut by as much as half!

You can get the ‘potassium party’ started with bananas, of course, but several other fruits will bump up potassium levels: apricots, cantaloupe, honeydew melon, and citrus fruits. Potassium-rich vegetables include asparagus, avocados, green beans, lima beans, cauliflower, and winter squash. Red meat, poultry, seafood, and dry beans such as peas and lentils are other good potassium sources.

So here's my suggestion for the NYC Health Dept. Leave the salt alone and party with potassium.

    ...and another thing

Your diet might be a Western diet if it's raining and the closest thing you can grab to cover your head is an empty pizza box.

Your diet might be a Western diet if you can't decide what to drink with your chicken nuggets: chocolate milk or strawberry milk.

Your diet might be a Western diet if just seeing the words "pizza box" and "chicken nuggets" makes you crave a beer.

A new study in the American Journal of Psychiatry spells out the elements of a Western diet pretty clearly: "Processed or fried foods, refined grains, sugary products, and beer."

And for women who follow such a diet for a decade or more, we can add this...

Your diet might be a Western diet if you have major depression, mild chronic depression, or anxiety disorders.

When Australian researchers at the University of Melbourne compared psychiatric evaluations to dietary questionnaires submitted by more than 1,000 women, the results were clear: depression and anxiety disorders were far more commonplace among women who indulged in a Western diet for at least 10 years.

In addition, risk of depression and anxiety was found to be lower in women who followed a "traditional" diet of vegetables, fruit, meat, fish, and whole grains.

This seems kind of obvious, but sometimes the obvious needs to be stated outright: Your diet has a huge effect on your mental well-being.

    To Your Good Health,

    Jenny Thompson
    HSI Director
