Wipe out prostate cancer without touching a single healthy cell

When you think about being diagnosed with prostate cancer, what are you most afraid of? The cancer itself, or the (let’s face it) terrible “treatments” the mainstream pushes?

Think about it—for all the suffering they put you through, chemotherapy and radiation have yet to show they can really do anything close to curing men with advanced prostate cancer.

In fact, most treatments only promise to make life a little easier, but that’s a joke. You could go under the knife, only to be left incontinent and impotent. Or you could shuttle yourself back and forth for daily radiation treatments—with the possible reward of living with a catheter for the rest of your days. For promising to make life a little easier, these treatments leave a lot to be desired.

But all of that could change, thanks to a formula that’s just hitting the U.S.—a formula that attacks cancer cells without harming a single healthy cell. A formula that actually repairs the DNA damage that leads to cancer. A formula that can stop cancer cell growth by 90% within one day.

It’s called Prostabel, and it’s a stunning breakthrough that owes its very existence to a brilliant scientist who was far ahead of his time.

Ancient remedies reinvented as modern cancer-fighters

You might remember the names Watson and Crick from science classes. Back in the early 1950s, they described the double-helix structure of DNA, the very blueprint of our bodies.

But around that same time, a young biochemist and biologist was going farther—much farther—at the prestigious Pasteur Institute in Paris.

Dr. Mirko Beljanski devoted his entire life to studying cell regulation and replication, especially how DNA and RNA take part in cellular health. Your DNA holds your unique genetic code, and RNA controls what happens with the cells in your body. Beljanski was especially interested in what happens when something goes wrong with cell regulation—and how to get it back on track.

His passion paid off. Around the same time that Watson and Crick were demonstrating the shape of DNA, Beljanksi discovered that, before genetic mutations of DNA occur, attacks on the double helix itself create a structure that no longer functions properly. This allows damaged DNA to replicate much faster, gaining speed with each division. Beljanksi connected this excess replication and increased cell multiplication to cancer.

Beljanski knew he was onto something—if he could find a way to stabilize that second structure, he could prevent DNA from abnormally replicating. So he started a tireless search for natural substances that could stabilize DNA without harmful side effects.

What he found were extracts that did just that and were toxic to cancer cells without doing harm to healthy cells (unlike chemotherapy and radiation, which destroy cancer cells and healthy cells without discrimination). Extracts that fight cancer without side effects. Among those were Pao pereira and Rauwoflia vomitoria.

Both have been used for centuries by indigenous peoples for a variety of ailments. And Dr. Beljanski found they could actually repair the abnormal structure I described a few moments ago.

He demonstrated that, at optimal doses, these two herbs stopped the proliferation of cancer cell lines while sparing healthy cells. This effect was the same with several kinds of cancer—brain, colon, liver, kidney, and skin. And, of course, Beljanski showed they were active against prostate cancer.1

Testing Rauwolfia vomitoria, he found that, with high doses, up to 80% of the mice treated with the extract lived 90 days. Those who went untreated were all dead by day 40. The mice Beljanski deemed cured survived in “excellent condition.”2

He went on to use both extracts successfully in numerous human case studies. But they would have been lost had it not been for one very important move the doctor made.

Dr. Mirko Beljanksi wanted to make sure his life’s work didn’t stop with his death. So before he died in 1998, he entrusted his research to Natural Source, which at that time was a new company devoted to advancing the world of natural medicine.

Their devotion to Beljanski’s mission shows in their work. Take the materials that make up the Prostabel formula. They’re painstakingly harvested from the far reaches of the earth—Pao pereira comes from the Amazon Rain Forest, and Rauwolfia vomitoria is gathered from the root of a tropical African tree. They’re then purified and rigorously tested. And then there’s the research they’ve sought out to prove the value of these miraculous herbs.

Cancer cell growth cut by 90% in less than a day

The work of Mirko Beljanski—and Natural Source’s continuation of that work—caught the eye of Dr. Aaron Katz, a leader in the field of natural medicine and men’s health. His research home base is Columbia University, where the studies on the ingredients in Prostabel have taken place.

Dr. Katz’s research on the formula started with a meeting with Beljanski’s daughter Sylvie. She was confident in her father’s work, and wanted to share it with the world. Dr. Katz was hopeful, but told Sylvie there were no guarantees. And the team at Natural Source knew they were taking a big risk in offering Pao pereria and Rauwolfia vomitoria up for trials—Dr. Katz’s team was going to report the truth no matter the outcome.

But it turned out that Sylvie and Natural Source had nothing to worry about. The power of these two herbs was revealed almost immediately. In fact, members of Dr. Katz’s team have called Pao pereira and Rauwolfia vomitoria the “most promising candidates to date” when it comes to fighting prostate and bladder cancer.

A major human trial is underway at Columbia’s Department of Urology, and preliminary results are very promising. Especially considering the results Dr. Katz has already seen in men taking Prostabel. A trial of 30 men with high PSA readings and a negative biopsy (meaning they don’t have cancer yet) showed that Protabel significantly lowered PSA over the course of a year.

And the men taking Prostabel had other good news to report—a dramatic improvement in urinary symptoms. They had better streams and better flow rates, and weren’t getting up as often at night. There was one more unusual bit to report from that trial, too—not one person dropped out because of side effects, because nobody experienced any.

When it comes to cancer, there haven’t been any human trials completed yet, but in vitro and animal trials are incredibly promising.

Pao pereira has already demonstrated that it’s toxic to cancer cells in other studies, but this is the first time this extract has really been looked at for its effect on prostate cancer cells specifically.

Applied to a line of cultured cancer cells, the extract significantly suppressed cell growth (by 90% as early as 24 hours after exposure!) and caused cancer cells to die. It also caused a significant decrease in overall tumor size.

Surprisingly, the greatest effect on tumor growth occurred at the lower doses of pao pereira tested on mice. At doses of 10 and 20mg/kg per day, tumor volume was reduced by 80% and 75%, respectively. Researchers aren’t quite sure why this is, but think it may be due to gastrointestinal effects at higher doses. Researchers also suggested that, because Pao pereira has tumor-suppressing activity without toxicity, it can be used to prevent cancer, not just as a treatment for it.3

And Rauwolfia vomitoria is just as impressive. In one trial, it was shown to suppress the growth of cancer cells. In another, it decreased tumor volume in mice by 58-70% depending on dose (7.5-75 mg/kg) over a 72-hour period.4

Overall, research has shown that Pao pereira extract more potently induces cell death than the Rauwolfia vomitoria extract. But the Rauwolfia extract is more successful at inhibiting cell cycle progression of prostate cancer cells—meaning it hampers their ability to grow and divide. So, these two make a more or less perfect pair in the Prostabel formula.

His doctor called his progress “a miracle”

The clinical trials are one thing, but what really speaks to me is the feedback being sent to Natural Source. Men are writing in from all over to share how Prostabel has, really, given them new leases on life. Here are just a few of the stories they’ve seen:

Ronald Limsin got the awful news after a biopsy in 2003—adenocarinoma of the prostate. His urologist thought he best solution would be surgery, but Ronald refused. While he did undergo radiation treatments, he took Pao pereira and Rauwolfia vomitoria (Natural Source also sells them separately from the Prostabel blend). His PSA was lowered to 1.82—a decrease expected to continue. His doctor called it a miracle, and when he wrote to Natural Source in 2007, Ronald was still doing well.

When Joe Mirelli was 70, he watched his PSA, already at a high 19, shoot up to 39 in a short time. His doctor diagnosed a mild adenoma of the prostate, and Joe turned to Prostabel. His situation rapidly improved. He’s now 87 and says everything is going well in terms of his prostate. He gardens every day and is very active.

Peter Williams decided to tell his story after an 18-month struggle. On the day he turned 68, an ultrasound showed an abnormality. He had a biopsy a few weeks later—adenocarcinoma. After undergoing hormone treatments, he knew he needed something better. So he looked to Dr. Beljanski’s formula. His PSA dropped from 5.57 to 0.10, and his radiologist can’t find anything abnormal. He’s been in remission for 2 years, with his PSA holding steady.

We’ll be sure to update you on the results of the current clinical trial at Columbia University. Ordering information for Prostabel is below.

A word about Rauwolfia

Rauwolfia comes in different forms, one of which has has been used extensively in naturopathic medicine for lowering blood pressure. That form, called rauwolfia serpentina, contains a substance called resperine, which is only available by prescription. The resperine has been removed from the rauwolfia vomitoria used in the Prostabel formula.

CLOGGED LUNGS CLEARED:
STOPPING AMERICA’S 4TH BIGGEST KILLER

When one of our contacts called us about a product he referred to as “truly bizarre,” I thought “How ‘out there’ can it really be?” After all, we come across some pretty unique and complex stuff almost daily in the course of our research. But in this case, there really is no other word to describe the novel treatment for cystic fibrosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and other respiratory ailments that he told me about: Bizarre sums it up nicely.

Fighting asthma or COPD? Increased lung capacity means no more wheezing and struggling for air

It’s a disease that still has the mainstream scratching their heads. They don’t have a cure, or even an effective treatment, for COPD. But that doesn’t keep them from trying to make a buck off it—so they throw inhaled steroids at the problem. Never mind the fact that those drugs don’t really work for COPD…or the fact they can raise your risk of heart attack or stroke by 58%.

And of course, those are the same drugs they throw at asthma, putting your health at severe risk.

Of course, I wouldn’t be writing this if I didn’t have an answer for you. And, as we often find here at HSI, the natural, steroid-free answer to COPD, asthma, and other lung conditions (including allergies, colds, and sinus headaches) lies in a formula that was stumbled upon purely by chance.

23 recently rediscovered herbs proven by centuries of use

As the CEO of a telecommunications company, Tom Long never thought he’d find himself marketing the latest breakthrough in respiratory health. But that was before the owner of his company got sick. Unable to breathe and fearing a heart attack, he checked himself into the hospital.

The doctors ran the usual tests and said there was nothing wrong. But he knew they were missing something—he felt awful and couldn’t believe the pain in his chest was “nothing.”

A friend suggested he see an acupuncturist and herbalist in Chicago. The herbalist knew what the problem was right away—he couldn’t breathe properly. Stress and a lack of exercise contributed to the problem, leaving his lungs “locked up.” And then he gave him something that started working almost immediately.

The herbalist let him in on the secret—Resprin. It’s a formula made of a blend of 23 herbs, specially formulated to support clear breathing. The herbs falls into three categories:

• Vaporizing herbs like peppermint and schizonpeta herba.

• Expectorant herbs that flush out mucus and dust—these herbs included ginger, licorice, and poria.

• Soothing herbs, like bupleurum and ligusticum wallichii, that help bronchial irritation.

Through the action of these three categories of herbs, the lungs physically have more space in which to take in more air with each breath. Because what it really comes down to is inflammation. Resprin actually relaxes the lining of the bronchial tubes, allowing more airflow into the lungs.

Increase your lung capacity by almost 40%

This is where Tom enters the story. The owner of his company was so amazed with Resprin that he brought it in for Tom to try. He immediately noticed he could breathe more deeply. And he knew he had to share it with others.

Tom started sharing Resprin with people who were having trouble breathing—asthma, COPD, sinus problems—nothing could stand up to Resprin. They were onto something big…so they put it to the test.

Before heading down the road of human trials, Resprin was put through an in vitro test in the lab. Normal airway tissue as well as airway tissue from asthma patients was tested. The tissue was exposed to a chemical irritant that is known to spur inflammation. When Resprin was introduced to the tissue, it proved its anti-inflammatory effects by lowering biomarkers of inflammation.

Of course, that wasn’t enough for Tom and the rest of the team at Nu Century Herbs. He wanted proof that Resprin would work for real people suffering from real breathing problems.

So they commissioned a trial in an independent lab. The trial had three phases, and Resprin proved that it worked almost immediately. During the first phase, participants were given just one dose of Resprin. Even with just that one dose, peak air flow improved nearly 6%.

By the third phase, the results were looking even better. Participants took Resprin every day for a month, and by the end of the month, the average improvement in peak air flow was 37%. Nearly half of the participants said they felt their energy levels and need for rescue medication were exceptionally improved, and another 28% felt they’d seen significant improvement. Most of them said they would keep using Resprin.

Harness the lung-boosting power trusted by marathon runners

Marathon runners are serious about lung capacity. If they can’t breathe, they can’t run. So it’s no surprise that one of the top runners in the world relies on Resprin (though it’s labeled as AirAide) to give him an edge.

Kenyan runner Benson Cheruiyot was able to shave a remarkable 2.5 minutes off his personal best marathon time using Resprin. Of course, we’re no marathon runners. You’re looking for something that will have you taking those deep, life-giving breaths without struggling and wheezing.

Wayne has been singing the praises of Resprin because of its effect on his wife Jeanne. The mainstream hasn’t even been able to identify the disease that has been deteriorating her lungs. But Resprin has slowed the deterioration and has helped her to lead a more active life.

Debbie had been looking for a natural alternative to her asthma inhaler. She was skeptical when she received a sample of Resprin. But once she’d taken a few, she found it works just as well as her inhaler, without the risk of side effects.

Sam’s had asthma for 15 years and had gotten used to carrying an inhaler with him everywhere he went. Like Debbie, he was skeptical before trying Resprin. Knowing he had his inhaler as a back up, he took Resprin and set out for a workout.

When he stopped to catch his breath at the top of a hill, he noticed something different. He was breathing heavily, sure, but there was no diminished function in breathing. He says he hasn’t breathed that well in 15 years, and that he spent the rest of that day walking around, breathing deeply and smiling. When he explained his experience to Tom, he said, “the chains have been cut.”

Even if you’re not suffering from a serious lung condition, Resprin can help you. Chris was stuck at work with a horrible sinus headache and congestion that left her barely able to breathe. Within minutes of taking Resprin, her headache was completely gone and she could breathe again. She says she always keeps some on hand.

And the makers of Resprin have heard from countless people who swear by it for dealing with colds and allergies.

Hypertension treatment proves 88 percent effective in Brazilian study

Hypertension treatment proves 88 percent effective in Brazilian study

Sometimes a promising treatment arises from the strangest circumstances. Recently, the discovery of a new hormone and the contents of a stray pamphlet from Vancouver’s Chinatown were the unlikely components that led a Yale-trained pharmacologist to a discovery that could eliminate your need for prescription hypertension drugs.

Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is one of the most common forms of cardiovascular disease in North America. Roughly 25 percent of the population has it, and the condition can lead to serious medical problems, including stroke, renal failure, arteriosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), heart attack, and congestive heart failure. Odds are, if you or someone you know has been diagnosed with high blood pressure, the doctor has recommended certain mainstays of conventional cardiovascular treatment–such as dietary modifications and prescription drugs.

But this new discovery may be able to dramatically enhance the positive effects of dietary changes in order to regulate blood pressure, and potentially reduce or even eliminate the need for prescription drugs in people with salt-sensitive hypertension.
Canadian lab uncovers calcium’s role in high blood pressure

For years, physicians believed that hypertension was a single disease with an unknown cause. Up until the 1980s, roughly 90 percent of all cases were listed as “essential hypertension,” meaning the cause of the heightened blood pressure was unknown.

Eventually, however, researchers realized that significant numbers of hypertension patients shared certain characteristics. A particularly large number (about 40 percent of all cases) suffered from salt-sensitive blood pressure along with low levels of a substance called renin, a kidney enzyme that plays a major role in easing high blood pressure. They also shared a peculiar condition-they all had low blood calcium levels but elevated levels of parathyroid hormone (the hormone responsible for maintaining healthy blood calcium levels). Researchers speculated that some compound in the body was inhibiting the normal function of the hormone and began searching for it.

At the University of Alberta in western Canada, Dr. Peter Pang-a Yale-trained pharmacologist and head of U of A’s department of physiology-led a group of researchers in an effort to find the cause of this type of hypertension. Through a series of tests on laboratory animals, they determined that a second hormone produced by the parathyroid gland was depressing calcium levels in the blood and causing high blood pressure.1 They named the hormone parathyroid hypertensive factor or PHF. Essentially, PHF causes calcium, which should circulate in the bloodstream, to build up inside cells. These calcium-heavy cells place increased pressure on arteries which increases blood pressure inside the arteries. In fact, one of the major categories of prescription drugs used to treat hypertension are calcium channel blockers that reduce the amount of calcium ions passing into the cells.

Once they realized what was causing the “unexplained” 40 percent of all hypertension cases–and high intracellular calcium, scientists had a foundation to search for new remedies.

Through his company, CV Technologies-a research and development company focused on using traditional Chinese and herbal medicines to produce modern nutraceuticals-Dr. Pang developed Pressure FX specifically to address hypertension caused by PHF. Its components are unusual, and the clinical research behind them is still sparse. But Dr. Pang asserts that it is an effective treatment for salt-sensitive hypertension, and his claim has been backed up by several studies.

Tibetan caterpillar mushroom helps stimulate drop in blood pressure

Practitioners of traditional Chinese medicine have used Cordyceps Sinensis for centuries to improve lung and kidney function, to suppress coughs, and to regulate blood coagulation. According to reports of traditional usage, it has helped ease respiratory diseases, treat arrhythmias, and reduce high blood pressure.2 Cordyceps, one of the two components of Pressure FX, is a fungus found in the highlands of China, Tibet, and Nepal (at elevations ranging from 3,500 to 10,000 feet above sea level). It is commonly known as caterpillar mushroom.

Researchers at the University of Alberta tested Cordyceps’ potential for lowering blood pressure by injecting various solutions (dosage ranged from 0.03mg/kg to 10 mg/kg) into anesthetized rats, then measuring the blood pressure in a tail artery. The experiments produced dose-dependent reductions in blood pressure. However, the effect was often fleeting-beginning within 15 seconds of treatment and ending barely a minute later.3

Scientists at the National Research Institute of Chinese Medicine in Taiwan achieved better results using higher doses of Cordyceps. They injected anesthetized rats with doses of 8, 16, 24, or 32 mg/kg. Not only did the treatment reduce blood pressure in a dose dependent manner, but the effect continued for 45 minutes.4

A cancer treatment’s hidden heart potential uncovered in Chinatown

Shark cartilage, the other component of Pressure FX, is more widely known for its ability to inhibit the growth of tumors. And even Dr. Pang admits that it’s not the first thing he would expect to include in a hypertension formula. “I would have never suspected something like shark cartilage, or added it to my mainstream research,” he commented, “but serendipity plays a role in science.”

Dr. Pang was in the midst of searching for a treatment for PHF-induced hypertension when a friend showed him a pamphlet he’d found in Vancouver’s Chinatown describing shark cartilage’s potential for treating diabetes, colon cancer, and breast cancer-conditions that Dr. Pang had already linked to excess intracellular calcium and possibly to PHF. With this knowledge as a base, he decided to test shark cartilage for hypertension.

Pang’s researchers injected shark cartilage into spontaneously hypertensive rats. When they did, the animals’ blood pressure dropped. The treatment also helped normalize the rate of calcium buildup in the animals’ cells.5 The researchers also tested shark cartilage on rats with normal blood pressure. When they injected the healthy rats with PHF, the rats’ blood pressure rose. However, when they gave the rats an injection of shark cartilage first, then gave them PHF, the rats’ blood pressure didn’t rise.

Although the exact mechanism that enables shark cartilage to control blood pressure isn’t known, Dr. Pang theorizes that “it is possible-I must stress possible-that shark cartilage contains something that antagonizes PHF.”
High blood pressure corrected in 88 percent of patients

Since results from intravenous applications of nutrients and therapies are often different from those obtained by oral administration, more research on shark cartilage’s effects on hypertension when taken orally was necessary. A group of Brazilian physicians tested the actual supplement form of Pressure FX in a clinical trial involving 102 hypertensive patients (74 with mild hypertension, 28 with moderate hypertension).6 The researchers tracked each patient’s condition for three to 12 months. Each subject took one to three Pressure FX capsules daily. Before they started taking the supplement, however, subjects received other forms of treatment. They followed researchers’ instructions to modify their lifestyle, including instructions to increase their consumption of fruit, vegetables, and legumes; to decrease their consumption of foods linked to lipid oxidation; and to take calcium, magnesium, and potassium supplements (which are commonly recommended to ease high blood pressure). In addition, 87 subjects received chelation therapy (10 to 20 treatments each).

The results were dramatic. Before the study began, the group’s mean blood pressure was 171.42 over 107.95. After treatment it was 126.13 over 83.36. The Brazilian researchers reported that between 50 and 60 percent of subjects responded to the lifestyle modifications and mineral supplementation alone. When Pressure FX was added to the treatment regimen, the number of subjects showing significantly reduced blood pressure jumped to 88 percent.
Of the 84 subjects who were taking hypertension drugs prior to the study, 63 were able to stop medication and maintain normal blood pressure with Pressure FX.
Pressure FX eases hypertension whenother treatments fail

In a recent article in the Townsend Newsletter for Doctors and Patients, Nelson Kraucak, M.D., ABFP, reported on his experience using Pressure FX at the Life Family Practice Center for Complementary Medicine in Lady Lake, Florida. Dr. Kraucak advised patients who weren’t responding to other treatments (such as magnesium, L-carnitine, and coenzyme Q10) to take one capsule of Pressure FX three times a day. He reported the treatment was effective in 65 percent of his patients.

The twists of fate that led Dr. Pang to develop this unique formula could mean a world of difference for the millions of people suffering from hypertension. Pressure FX appears to be a safe, effective treatment for regulating blood pressure levels. CV Technologies assures us it conducts assays on each batch of supplements to ensure they remain consistent.

Could diabetes and cancer be the result of “excessive PHF syndrome?”

Although researchers originally linked PHF to hypertension only, subsequent research has suggested that excessive amounts of parathyroid hypertensive factor may contribute to other diseases.

“By the time we got the mechanism of PHF studied, we realized that it was not just a hypertension hormone. It was an intracellular calcium regulating hormone,” says Dr. Pang. “That is very, very significant, because a lot of diseases and health problems are related to abnormal cellular calcium regulation.”

People with type II diabetes often have heightened cellular calcium levels-a situation that disables their insulin receptors and exacerbates the disease. Intracellular calcium also affects mitosis (cell division), and very preliminary research suggests that PHF may play a role in some cancers. A small-scale study conducted by Dr. Pang and his associates showed that 60 percent of breast cancer patients and 70 percent of colon cancer patients have elevated PHF levels.7

Dr. Pang is currently investigating PHF’s links to other diseases, and the possibility that PHF treatments could prove effective against ailments other than hypertension.

Vitamins that all diabetics should know about

Two vitamins that all diabetics should know about

Type II diabetes is one of the most prevalent diseases in the world today. Fortunately, it is also one of the most treatable. With weight loss, a healthy diet, and exercise, many people with Type II diabetes are able to maintain healthy blood sugar levels without medication.

That’s good, because the stakes are high. Uncontrolled Type II diabetes can lead to a variety of serious health problems, like kidney disease and cardiovascular disease. But a new study suggests that vitamin supplementation may help prevent some of these problems, by addressing a known marker for these serious complications.
Mainstream knows what to look for – but can’t do much about it

One out of three people with diabetes develop kidney disease in their lifetime. But if the warning signs are noted before kidney function is actually reduced, treatment may prevent further damage. And one of the most valuable markers of diabetics’ kidney health is urinary albumin excretion rate (AER).

Albumin is a protein synthesized in the liver that works to transport various substances in the blood stream. When too much albumin is excreted in the urine, it’s a strong sign that the kidneys are in trouble. (It can also be a sign of complications from hypertension and other manifestations of cardiovascular disease, another common diabetic complication.) Unfortunately, mainstream medicine hasn’t yet found a treatment approach that consistently reduces this important marker.

Angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibiting drugs, which are used to lower blood pressure, have also been shown to lower the AER of some patients with Type II diabetes. But, according to the new study in the journal Diabetic Medicine, they don’t work for the majority of people. The authors of the study knew that vitamins C and E had shown kidney-protective effects in animal studies. So they recruited 29 participants (20 men and 9 women) and set out to track the vitamins’ effects on humans.
Natural approach produces significant results – and no side effects

In this Danish study, researchers tracked the effect of vitamins C and E on the urinary albumin excretion rate (AER) of patients with Type II diabetes. The participants’ average age was 58, and, on average, they had had Type II diabetes for 12 years. And all had high AER levels. (AER can be reported in several different ways, but in this study they defined high levels as anywhere from 30 to 300 milligrams of albumin in 24 hour urine collection sample.) All but one of the participants were taking ACE inhibitors before they entered the study; they were all required to stop taking ACE inhibitors and/or vitamin supplements eight weeks before the study began.

The participants were divided into two groups, and assigned to take either 1,250 mg of vitamin C and 680 IU of vitamin E (d-alpha-tocopherol) each morning, or five matching placebo tablets. This continued for four weeks; then the participants began a three week washout period, and then “crossed over.” (This means that the participants in the first placebo group then took vitamins C and E, and the participants that first took the vitamins then took placebo.) This continued for another four weeks.

In both phase I and phase II, urinary albumin excretion rates decreased significantly in the patients taking the vitamins (an average of 19 %). And none of the participants reported any side effects from the treatment.

If you have Type II diabetes, chances are you’re already keeping a close watch on your health. Now there may be another step you can take to protect your body from the ravages of this disease. The addition of these two basic nutrients to your regimen is a simple step that may give your body some added protection from the degenerative effects of Type II diabetes.

High Urine Protein Levels - NEW RESEARCH THAT
EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW ABOUT

NEW RESEARCH THAT
EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW ABOUT

Like many of you, I’ve been a little off-track lately. This week I’ve tried my best to get back into my normal routine at home and at work, with mixed results.

But I’m coming back to the realization that, now more than ever, we need to focus on our health. One thing that struck me today was how much important health information I had missed in just one week. Like, for instance, a study published in the September 10 issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine – one that could have implications for women all over the world.

In this original research, scientists in the Netherlands found significant evidence that both birth control pills and hormone replacement therapy increase a woman’s risk of developing a condition called microalbuminuria. People with this condition have increased levels of protein in their urine, which is an early marker for kidney disease. And a Canadian study published in JAMA this past July concluded that microalbuminaria was a risk factor for heart disease, based on its analysis of more than 9,000 people age 55 and older.

The study included 4,301 Dutch women. After adjusting for a whole host of confounding factors (like age, hypertension, obesity, and smoking), the women who had taken the Pill or HRT in the past year had nearly twice the risk of high urine protein levels than did non-users. Some of the HRT users took straight estrogen, while others took pills combining estrogen and progestin. In all cases, the risk of developing protein in the urine rose with years of medication use; in fact, they found that women who had taken either type of medication for more than five years had more than two and a half times the risk of non-users.

I can think of dozens of women I know who have taken either birth control pills or HRT (or both) for more than five years, some for decades. I’m sure you can, too. Worldwide, the numbers must reach well into the hundreds of thousands – maybe even into the millions. Even if only half of them develop this condition, it’s a serious thing.

Granted, this is just one study, and the research team didn’t follow the women long enough to see how many of them actually developed kidney or heart disease – or whether protein levels dropped after discontinuing use. But other studies have produced evidence that supplemental estrogen can increase the risk of heart disease, as well as breast cancer and other diseases.

At the very least, it is one more check in the “Con” column when deciding whether or not to take HRT. For years, doctors have been telling women they should take HRT, not only to counteract the effects of menopause, but also to combat everything from heart disease to osteoporosis. Now we’re finding that not only do these “value-added” claims come with a serious caveat, the drugs may also do as much harm as good. Even the American Heart Association acknowledged in its recently revised guidelines, “we’re not sure if estrogen helps or harms the heart.”

This news comes on the heels of the soy controversy, which we’ve discussed in recent messages. Concerns about the safety of phytoestrogens, like the isoflavones found in soy, may have women questioning whether they should use natural menopause formulas like genistein after all. And now with yet another reason not to take prescription HRT, it’s easy to feel like they aren’t any safe options left.

But if you’re looking for a way to address the changes we experience during menopause, synthetic HRT and isoflavones aren’t your only choices. There are some alternatives that you can easily find at any local health food store or online supplement retailer right now.

Herbal supplements like black cohosh, dong quai, chaste tree berry, and evening primrose have been used safely for centuries. These natural approaches can help normalize hormone levels, diminish hot flashes, and relieve the insomnia and anxiety that many women experience.

Nutritional supplements like bioflavonoids, vitamin E, pantothenic acid, vitamin B6, and magnesium can help reduce heavy bleeding during perimenopause, minimize hot flashes, increase energy, and relieve fatigue. There may be other options available to you as well; talk to your doctor about what else might work in your situation.
